What went right this week

A friend recently told me about a magazine called ‘Positive News’ which, after doing a bit of research, has the intention to inspire people and spread good news in the world.

After looking this magazine up, I subscribed to it as I was so surprised by how uplifted I felt by reading some of their articles, which were full of hope, optimism and joy. With so much ‘bad’ news around, it was refreshing and reassuring to see that it’s not all ‘bad’ and that there are actually a LOT of good things happening which just aren’t highlighted in mainstream media.

Every week, the magazine produces a roundup of some of their most positive articles called ‘what went right this week’. I read the most recent of these and it was so heart-warming to learn little snippets of upbeat news across the spectrum of health, society, economics, and environment amongst other things.

It got me thinking that this concept of ‘what went right’ could be turned into a nourishing practice every Sunday evening to slow down and think about some positive events from the week. Unfortunately, it is often perceived ‘bad’ events that can take the focus of a week, with the ‘good’ bits being taken for granted or forgotten about.

You could spend as little or as long as you wanted on this exercise, but I can almost guarantee that spending even just a few minutes thinking about the things that went right would encourage optimism and gratitude.

Some things I thought of that went right for me this week:

·        My car started when I got into it, and I got to my practice safely everyday

·        My dog’s health is improving

·        I saw a deer in my garden

·        I had an amazing meal at the Bridford Inn

·        I wasn’t worried about all the rain on my now fixed house roof

·        I had warm water to have a shower

·        My fridge was working

·        I have my sight, hearing, taste, touch and smell to experience life

…I could go on!

Often when we feel things are going wrong, we think they’ll never end. And when things are going right, we think they’ll never last… But when we focus on the seemingly small ordinary things, we realise that a lot goes right, a lot of the time!

Here’s to not taking the wonderful little everyday things for granted!
